Bar-Ilan University team discovers a gene that increases lifespan of mice
A team led by Dr. Haim Cohen, of Bar-Ilan University’s Mina and Everard Goodman Faculty of Life Sciences, and including researchers from Hadassah Medical Center, the Hebrew University, and Carnegie Mellon University, has discovered a gene that increases survival in mammals. The discovery increases the likelihood that similar activity can be found in a human gene. Dr. Cohen and team’s research was published this week in the prestigious journal Nature.

Bar-Ilan signs agreement with University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine
Bar-Ilan University’s Faculty of Medicine in the Galilee and the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine have signed a landmark agreement to continue collaboration on a number of projects.

Bar-Ilan, Haifa and Hebrew Universities set up new joint research facility
Scientists from Bar-Ilan, Haifa and Hebrew universities will be studying the starlet sea anemone, also known as Nematostella vectensis. The Nematostella Research Center will be funded by the Israeli Ministry of Science and Technology and will be located at Bar-Ilan University and will be run by Dr. Oren Levy of Bar-Ilan University.

Bar-Ilan’s Dr. Shlomy Mualem Publishes New book On Writer Jorge Luis Borges
Dr. Shlomy Mualem from Bar-Ilan’s Department of Comparative Literature recently published a book about the influential Argentine writer, essayist, poet and translator Jorge Luis Borges. Entitled Borges and Plato: A Game with Shifting Mirrors, the book provides a detailed comparison between the characteristics of the classical period of Greek philosophy and the literary and theoretical writings of Borges, considered by many as one of the most influential authors and intellectuals of the 20th century.

Students From Bar-Ilan Host Kids from South Israel
Children who live in communities within range of Gaza missiles were hosted by the student association of Bar-Ilan. The student association of Bar-Ilan University planned a day of fun, including games, candy and other treats.
“We want to express real admiration for the children of the south and residents of the south,” Student Union officials said. “We are very happy to host these children”.
